My name is Glory Edim, founder of Well-Read Black Girl (WRBG), a book club turned literary festival based in Brooklyn, NY. WRBG provides a vital space for Black women readers and writers to connect and grow in conversation.
Since launching in 2015, WRBG has steadily grown into a thriving online community of 109K passionate Instagram followers. Our goal is to showcase the universality of Black women through literature. Through reading our community addresses racial inequity in publishing and pays homage to the literary legacies of Black women writers like Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, and Maya Angelou.
Each month I host book club meetings, readings and Twitter chats (#WRBGChat) with emerging and established authors. In fall 2017, I organized the first-ever WRBG Fest featuring award-winning writers, including Jacqueline Woodson, Tayari Jones, Rebecca Carroll, and Renée Watson. Whether we gather in-person or connect online, WRBG is a one-of-a-kind affirming space for Black women to engage in discourse with one another.
Ultimately, the Well-Read Black Girl community has changed my life. My book club led me to discover my life’s purpose: Uplifting the narratives of Black women. From winning the 2017 Innovator’s Award from the Los Angeles Times Book Prizes to joining the board of New York City’s Housing Works Bookstore, I’m honored to be of service and shine a light on the work of so many amazing authors. I’m grateful for our beautiful, bright community. Together, as a collective mind with a shared purpose, we can reimagine the literary canon. My 1st book project, Well-Read Black Girl: Finding Our Stories, Discovering Ourselves, will debut on October 30, 2018. It is an incredible collection of essays and interviews that reflect the vibrancy of Well-Read Black Girl. I’m proud to share their stories with you.
To every supporter of WRBG, thank you for believing in me. Thank you for entrusting me with your stories. We’ll always shine together!
