Why are we hosting a festival?
WRBG recognizes the literary accomplishments and activism of Black authors. Writers like Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, Sonia Sanchez, Maya Angelou, and Ntozake Shange have made inroads for future generations of writers and readers. Inspired by their commitment, the WRBG writing conference and literary will address the dire need to create empowering spaces for Black writers and readers to commune. WRBG wants to transform how Black women explore their identities on the page and hone their creative visions. We’re asking you to help us reach our goal on Kickstarter!
The day-long event will be divided into two parts for attendees. The morning sessions will be exclusively for the WRBG Writer’s Conference. Participants will engage with fellow writers and industry professionals, including authors, literary agents, and editors from major publishing houses. Workshops will provide practical advice and encouragement to aspiring writers looking to develop their craft. We’ll offer critique sessions, discuss how to pitch your first story and review the fundamentals of writing a book proposal.
The second half of the festival will be a full celebration of readers and authors. Imagine the world’s best book club featuring an array of outstanding authors and writers, including Tayari Jones, Naomi Jackson, LaShonda Barnett, Tiphanie Yanique, Tia Williams, Jenna Wortham, Doreen St. Félix, and more. Your support will allow us to:
- Pay for the venue and production costs
- Invite special literary and musical guests
- Ensure the event is low-cost and accessible to the community
